Imprinted analytical approaches for determination of antibiotics. Do we catch up with antibodies?

Abstract

Molecularly imprinted polymers are widely used synthetic receptors in the development of analytical approaches for detecting natural and anthropogenic toxicants. Moreover, anthropogenic toxicants include not only chemical compounds used in agriculture (e.g., pesticides) but also pharmaceuticals (e.g., antibiotics). Currently, antibodies are the primary receptors used for the isolation, concentration, and subsequent determination of antibiotics in biological fluids and wastewater. The need to replace antibodies with their synthetic analogues is pressing not only due to their complexity and expense of production, but also the impossibility of producing antibodies to several widely used antibiotics (e.g., anthracycline antibiotics).
Our work demonstrates the current progress at development of analytical systems for detecting antibiotics using molecularly imprinted polymers as molecular recognition elements over the past 5 years.
