Experimental Comparison of Photodynamic Therapy Efficacy Using Indocyanine Green and Photosens in a Colorectal Cancer Model

Abstract
Indocyanine green is widely used in medicine as a fluorescent dye for assessing cardiac function and vascular perfusion. This study compared the efficacy of photodynamic therapy (PDT) with two photosensitizers: indocyanine green (ICG, activation at 808 nm) and Photosens (PS, activation at 662 nm). The experiment was performed on Balb/c mice bearing a colorectal cancer model. PDT outcomes were evaluated by tumor volume dynamics over three weeks and histology. PDT with ICG was accompanied by a temperature increase above 48°C and resulted in complete tumor regression in both mice, with no tumor cells detected in histological sections. After PDT with Photosens, tumors continued to grow, with necrosis comprising only 20–30% of the volume. ICG demonstrated significantly higher efficacy than Photosens for PDT of colorectal cancer in mice. The work was supported by RSF grant 23-14-00287-P.
