THE SYNERGISTIC EFFECT OF LIGHT AND SOUND WAVES ON MELANOMA TREATMENT

Abstract

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is now a well-established treatment modality for non-melanoma cutaneous lesions. Over the past decade, it has gained significant acceptance in Latin America, where treatment cost-effectiveness is a critical factor in healthcare decision-making. Traditionally, pigmented melanoma lesions have been considered poor candidates for PDT because melanin absorption limits light penetration and reduces treatment efficacy. In this presentation, we demonstrate that combining acoustic waves (ultrasound) to induce sonodynamic therapy (SDT) with photodynamic therapy can overcome these limitations. By exploiting the complementary mechanisms of PDT and SDT, both superficial and large-volume melanoma lesions can be effectively targeted and eliminated with high therapeutic efficiency.. Using the Sinclair swine melanoma model, we have observed remarkable therapeutic responses, providing strong evidence that this combined photo-sonodynamic approach represents a promising strategy for the treatment of pigmented melanoma lesions that have traditionally remained challenging for conventional photodynamic therapy.
This work highlights a significant advance in developing non-invasive therapies for aggressive and deeply pigmented skin cancers.
