Laser vaccine adjuvants in mice: laser sources and biological mechanisms

Abstract

The use of laser irradiation as an adjuvant for intradermal vaccination has gained considerable attention over the past decade. A substantial body of evidence has accumulated regarding the local biological effects of laser irradiation; however, the majority of studies remain at the preclinical stage. Most in vivo investigations have been conducted using laboratory mice, which represent the standard experimental model in immunology for vaccine evaluation and provide a convenient platform for preclinical research.
Here, we present a systematic analysis of studies investigating the effects of laser irradiation in mice at both the local level (i.e., at the site of skin irradiation) and the systemic level. This analysis is expected to help identify existing gaps in the understanding of the underlying biological mechanisms, determine the most effective laser irradiation parameters for activation of the immune response, and support the development of more effective laser irradiation-based vaccine adjuvants.
