How to surface: facile technique for the Zn-rich QDs ligand exchange

Abstract

Colloidal quantum dots (QDs) are the popular material in the large area of the science and technology. One of the common challenges in QDs application is the high cost and the complexity of the obtaining and modifying procedures. We describe a simple and flexible technique for modifying the ligand layer, developed for gradient alloyed CdZnSeS/ZnS QDs. The essence of the process lies in the exchange of ligands by molecules of functionalized thiols. Described technique bases on the Hard and Soft Acids and Bases theory and provide to obtain the stable nanoparticles with positive, negative or neutral surface charge.
In the current research we present the data evidence the versatility, efficiency and perspectivity of the developed technique and discuss the process mechanism. As an object of modification, the batches of gradient alloyed and core-shell QDs were taken. As a functionalized thiols thioglycolic, 3-mercaptopropionic, dihydrolipoic acids, cysteamine and 1-octanethiol were used.
