Fiber optic few-mode needle for refractive index sensing

Abstract
A miniature refractive index sensor based on an intermode fiber interferometer with a tapered few-mode fiber is proposed. The sensitive area is less than a millimeter in longitudinal cross-section and less than 125 micrometers in cross-section. The sensor's performance was verified experimentally by measuring its interference response in aqueous glycerol solutions over a concentration range from 0 to 100%. The sensor can potentially be embedded into ivasive catheters for biomedical diagnostics purposes.
