Abstract

Methods for controlling the optical properties of random media play an important role in biomedical diagnostics and materials science. In biomedical diagnostics and photonic therapeutic technologies, the method of optical clearing of biological tissues is widely used, in which the refractive index of the matrix medium is changed by introducing various immersion agents. In material science, a similar principle can be applied, based on controlling the dielectric permittivity of the matrix medium in which the scattering sites are embedded. Such a method can be referred to as the Refractive Index Tuning (RIT) technology. Previously, the RIT technique using gases as a media with a tunable refractive index under pressure action [1] was considered for the analysis of micro- and nanoporous materials. In this work, another technology for controlling the refractive index of matrix media is proposed, based on the use of supercritical fluids (in particular, supercritical carbon dioxide) as substances with the tunable permittivity (and, accordingly, the refractive index). Based on statistical modeling of radiation transport in random media with tunable properties and previously obtained experimental data on model objects [2], the effectiveness of this approach for the diagnostics of porous media and composite materials is demonstrated.
