Abstract

This paper investigates the feasibility of synthesizing narrowband Ku-band bandpass filters (BPFs) based on hollow modified cylindrical resonators (MCRs) operating in high-Q TE011 modes. Such filters, with narrow fractional bandwidths ranging from 0.2% to 0.5%, are required for the implementation of output multiplexers in onboard radio relay equipment for satellite systems transmitting digital TV signals compliant with the DVB-T and DVB-T2 standards. Several MCR configurations are proposed in which optimization of the resonator geometry eliminates the degeneracy between high-Q and low-Q modes and provides operating regimes with an extended frequency range supporting a single TE011 mode. Capacitive resonator coupling elements allowing a wide range of coupling-coefficient variation are investigated. Based on the obtained results, the feasibility of implementing BPFs with quasi-elliptic insertion-loss characteristics and additional transmission zeros is demonstrated. Experimental investigation of a sixth-order narrowband Ku-band BPF prototype with a 34 MHz passband confirms the results of the theoretical analysis and demonstrates excellent agreement between the calculated and measured characteristics in both the frequency and time domains.
