Compact Multimode Microwave Filter with Cascaded-Triplet Topology

Nikita M. Gerasimov; Waveguide-based Systems LLC, Saratov, Russia.

Abstract

A novel compact fifth-order microwave bandpass filter based on a cascaded-triplet topology is proposed. The design employs rectangular resonators operating in the TE₁₀₁ and TE₁₀₂ modes, allowing several resonant responses to be efficiently arranged within a reduced physical volume. The filtering network is formed by two cascaded triplets sharing a common resonator, which results in a fifth-order response while preserving a compact resonator configuration. The use of different resonant modes provides additional flexibility in controlling inter-resonator coupling and enables the realization of cross-coupling paths required for enhanced frequency selectivity. The proposed topology combines multimode resonator operation with a cascaded-triplet coupling scheme, offering a promising approach for the miniaturization of high-performance microwave filters. Particular attention is given to the electromagnetic coupling between adjacent resonators and to the excitation of the required TE₁₀₁ and TE₁₀₂ modes. The structure is suitable for implementation in compact microwave front ends where reduced size and high selectivity are important. The presented concept can be adapted to different center frequencies and bandwidth requirements by appropriate scaling and coupling optimization. This topology therefore provides a flexible platform for the development of compact fifth-order microwave filters for modern communication and radar applications without substantially increasing overall structural design complexity.
