Abstract
Multiplexers are designed to combine multiple narrowband signals into a single wideband signal. They are used in terrestrial and space communication systems, as well as in electronic warfare systems. The development of such devices involves a number of specific challenges that require trade-offs. For example, it is necessary not only to minimize insertion loss and its variation, but also to ensure high interchannel isolation. In addition, the multiplexer design should be as simple and manufacturable as possible.
This paper presents the results of the development and investigation of four-channel waveguide multiplexers operating in the Ka- and K-bands, intended for use in onboard radio-electronic systems of spacecraft. They are based on sixth- and eighth-order bandpass filters with rectangular resonators. To ensure a high level of isolation between nonadjacent filter resonators, electromagnetic couplings were implemented to produce transmission zeros in the filter frequency response. The manufacturability of the device design is ensured by its fabrication from only two parts—the housing and the cover. The validity of the obtained results was experimentally confirmed.
