Methods and devices for optical imaging of tissue metabolism

Abstract
The violation of metabolic processes in the human body is associated with the development of many diseases. Examples of such pathologies are disorders that occur during the development of oncology, in the progression and complications of diabetes mellitus, rheumatological diseases, etc., and which may be associated with shifts in oxidative phosphorylation processes, tissue hypoxia, changes in the morphology of tissues and cells, accumulation of toxic products of carbohydrate metabolism, etc. However, the clinician has a limited number of instrumental methods for evaluating such changes.
In this work, we consider several optical imaging methods that can be used successfully to study tissue metabolism. In particular, the possibilities of hyperspectral and laser speckle contrast imaging, polarimetry and registration of the intensity and lifetime of fluorescence in the study of pathologies associated with impaired metabolic processes in cells and their oxygen supply are demonstrated. The technical implementation of the methods and advanced algorithms for data processing, as well as examples of their clinical application, are presented.
