The quest for novel endogenous contrast for optical in vivo diagnostics

Abstract

Optical spectroscopy is widely used for non-invasive biomedical diagnostics and surgery guidance. Among the optical methods, label-free approaches are of high interest due to faster clinical translation, as in the case of exogenous contrast (fluorescent probes, nanoparticles, delivery systems) a long period of preclinical and clinical tests is required. Label-free methods require endogenous contrast such as hemoglobin (e.g., for tissue oxygenation) or NADH (metabolic imaging), and novel sources of signal delivering information about physiological processes in the human organism attract attention of researchers in biophotonics. The recent advances in this field will be discussed, including specific optical response of some organs and general mechanisms of fluoresccence formation in heterogenous systems of molecules.
