Abstract
Nowadays materials in which it is possible to observe the processes of anti-Stokes luminescence find their application not only in the field of science, but also in practical applications [1, 2]. Materials with coactivation with Tb-Yb ions are of particular interest, since energy transfer occurs between these doping ions, which is accompanied by cross-relaxation processes of terbium ions with energy transfer between the following levels: 5D3, 7F6 --> 5D4, 7F0. This process becomes possible because the energy difference between levels 5D3-5D4 and 7F0-7F6 is almost the same [3].
In this work, the spectral and kinetic characteristics of BaY2F8:5%Tb3+-x%Yb3+(x=2, 5, 10) crystals were investigated. Absorption spectra, anti-Stokes luminescence spectra under pulsed excitation at 980 nm and luminescence kinetics were recorded and interpreted. Antistokes luminescence was detected at the transitions from the 5D3 and 5D4 states (~380 nm, ~540 nm). The cooperative sensibilization of terbium ions was found to involve a two- or three-photon energy transfer process between the following levels: 2Yb(2F5/2)-->Tb(5D4) [4], 2Yb(2F5/2)+Yb(2F5/2)-->Tb(5D1)-->Tb(5D3) [5]. The discovered process of energy transfer to terbium ions was found to be efficient, which makes the investigated materials promising anti-Stokes light converters.
