Abstract
The structural properties of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with diameters of 7 nm and 18 nm were investigated before and after grinding. X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, TEM and Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) patterns were used to analyze the structural changes in MWCNTs. In addition to experimental studies, simulations of structures containing Stone-Wales defects, two vacancies and stacking disorder were conducted. Corresponding structure factors, which matched the observed FFT patterns, were calculated. The results indicate that MWCNTs with smaller diameters, were initially highly curved and undergo minimal structural changes upon grinding. In contrast, larger diameter MWCNTs indicates significant structural transformations. They are rotation of the outer layer and formation of regions with different stacking disorder.
