Abstract
The determination of the spectral optical properties of biological tissues is highly important, since information about the content of biological components can be retrieved. In this study, the diffusion approximation was used to calculate the spectral absorption coefficient of the rabbit lung. Based on the absorption spectra of various biological components, a digital reconstruction of the absorption spectrum of the rabbit lung was performed to obtain the contents of DNA, blood, water, melanin and lipofuscin. The results showed that due to the ageing process of the lung tissues under study, the contents of melanin and lipofuscin were similar. The research used in the present study can be useful to evaluate the age of other biological tissues or even to discriminate certain diseases, such as different types of cancer.
