ROUND TABLE: A BRIEF HISTORY OF MUSICAL INNOVATIONS IN WESTERN EUROPEAN CULTURE

Vladimir V. Orlov

Abstract

In the Western European tradition, one of the most important features of a musical work is innovation, artistic discovery. In this report, we will try to outline the history of musical innovations from antiquity to the present day.
The centuries - old history of Western European musical culture in terms of its influence is divided into three global epochs: antiquity and the Middle Ages (before the XVI century), Modern times (XVII – XIX centuries), Modern times (since the XX century). Such a tradition of periodization of the history of music, in which antiquity and the Middle Ages are united in one epoch, was proposed by S.S. Skrebkov in his work "Artistic principles of musical styles". The basis for this is the ontologically conditioned orientation of musical art towards eternal, unchangeable essences and values (mythologism), which in the Middle Ages had already taken shape as a canon requirement.
In this regard, the culturological concept of Yu.M. Lotman, associated with the dichotomy of two types of cultures – canonical and non-canonical, seems important and relevant. One of them is focused on canonical systems ("the art of aesthetics of identity"), the other – on violation of canons and pre-prescribed norms ("the art of aesthetics of differences"). In the art of the first type, aesthetic values arise as a result of the fulfillment of the norm, and in the second, on the contrary, as a result of its violations. Each of the three global musical and historical epochs corresponds to one of the paradigms in its own way.
