Boris V. Gnedenko’s Scientific School : Principles of Activity

Abstract

Boris V. Gnedenko (1912–1995) is the founder of major scientific schools in the field of probability theory, queuing theory and reliability theory, laureate of the USSR State Prize in 1979 for work on the reliability of complex technical systems. B. V. Gnedenko graduated from the Physics and Technology Department of the Pedagogical Faculty of Saratov State University in 1930. He was 18 years old when he graduated from the university.
The scientific and pedagogical career of B. V. Gnedenko developed rapidly: 1937 - defense of a dissertation for the degree of candidate of physical and mathematical sciences, 1941 - defense of a dissertation for the degree of doctor of physical and mathematical sciences, 1945 - election to corresponding members Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, 1948 - election as an academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR.
B. V. Gnedenko had many students with whom he worked, following his own system. In particular, like-minded colleagues noted the following features of Boris V. Gnedenko as a supervisor:
generosity in the formulation of scientific problems and assistance in their solution;
responsible approach to the formulation of the topic of work with a predictable positive outcome (dissertation defense);
involvement of a group of graduate students and applicants on topics that have already been marked by serious achievements by Boris V. Gnedenko and his students in order to quickly achieve a complete solution to the problem.
The report highlights Boris V. Gnedenko’s opinions on scientific and pedagogical activity. He highly appreciated the historical aspect in the teaching of special disciplines. Gnedenko's credo as a teacher is "A teacher must teach students to learn."
