Speckle noise assessment as a method of OCT analysis of brain glioma

Abstract

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is widely applied in biomedical research and is used to visualize the internal structure of tissue samples. The detailed examination of OCT images is strongly disturbed by the presence of speckle noise. But it can also carry information that can characterize the visualized tissue. The analysis of the shape and scale parameters derived from the probability density function of the standard gamma distribution applied to the imaging of speckles was performed in this work. Application of such analysis to the OCT images of ex vivo brain glioma and intact tissues provided additional features for differentiation of tissue types and demonstrated its efficiency for the prospects of OCT in neurosurgery.
