Abstract

The scattering and birefringence coefficients of collagen bundles at various levels of tissue hydration were estimated experimentally by optical coherence tomography on rat tail tendon samples. The measurement results are compared with theoretical ones obtained for systems of cylindrical scatterers using known models of collagen tissue dehydration. Both the data on the scattering coefficients and the data on birefringence confirm the validity of the statement that with a decrease in the volume fraction of water in the tissue from the native level to 0.5 or higher, the water content in collagen fibrils almost does not change.
