Statistical and spectral properties of spatio-temporal skin temperature oscillations derived by sweat glands activity: thermal imaging exploration

Abstract
The effect of sympathetic sweat glands activation (SGA) on the spatio-temporal distribution of skin temperature was studied. The practical significance of the study of SGA is that the activity of each sweat gland is controlled by the sympathetic nerve. Dysfunction of the sympathetic nerve, which develops with the development of many social diseases, leads to inhibition of the activity of the sweat gland. Exploration of spatio-temporal skin temperature oscillations was performed by cooled thermal imaging camera operating in the spectral range of 8-9 μm.
Results:
It has been shown that activation of the sweat glands which characterizes an increase in the sympathetic response leads to changes in the statistical spatial distribution of temperatures on the surface of the human body. In this case, the histogram of temperature values is shifted into the low-temperature region with a simultaneous increase in the root-mean-square deviation. For the first time, a statistical index of pore activation has been introduced which makes it possible to track the sympathetic activation of the sweat glands at a low spatial resolution of thermograms.
The activity of the sweat glands leads to the appearance of spectral components in the region of more than 0.1 Hz, which is not typical for fluctuations in skin temperature caused by hemodynamics. The results obtained can be used for spectral separation of thermographic data from components caused by hemodynamics and activity of sweat glands. The filtered space-time temperature components can form a map of sweat pore activity and a map of blood vessels with the help of further mathematical processing. Thus, a new diagnostic tool appears in the field of physiology and medicine.
