Abstract

The aim of this work is to study the characteristics of directional coupling in the process of respiratory sinus arrhythmia in different age groups in various stages of sleep and in the waking state.
Directional coupling between the respiration signal and the interbeat intervals signal of subjects from the KILA and SIESTA databases in the awake state and in rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and deep sleep (DS) are investigated. About 100 records was analyzed.
The main method of analysis is the method for diagnostics of directional couplings based on modeling of phase dynamics. The directional coupling indices were calculated between the signals of the RR-intervals, respiration and electroencephalograms at different values of the trial delay between the experimental time series.
The results demonstrate the differences in the calculated indices in different age groups at different stages of sleep and in the awake state. These results show the sensitivity of the indices used to changes in the psychophysical state of the subjects, expand the understanding of the cardiorespiratory interaction and the influence on this process from the processes of higher nervous activity.
