ROUND TABLE: Antique Knowledge: Approaches of the ancient Greeks and ancient Romans
Victor V. Rozen, Saratov State University, Saratov, Russia
Abstract
The civilizations of Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome are usually united by the term "antiquity". Despite the fact that these civilizations existed at the same historical time and were closely connected with each other, the approaches of the ancient Greeks and the ancient Romans to the issues of the world order are sharply different. The Greeks were interested in such philosophical problems as the problem of the creation of the world, the sources of order and harmony of the world, its driving forces, models of the cosmos, etc.; at the same time, the intellectual efforts of scientists of the Greco-Roman period are shifting towards solving purely practical problems. The purpose of the report is to clarify the reasons for these differences.
