Abstract
In the presented study we investigate the possible applications of the cross-correlation analysis in the framework of the Memory Functions Formalism for the diagnosis of nocturnal frontal epilepsy (NFLE). We analyze bioelectric brain signals (electroencephalograms, EEG) from different areas of the human brain cortex to discover underlying correlations and dynamic characteristic relationships among them. During the analysis, we study spectral characteristics of statistical memory functions and quantitative parameters of memory effects in the brain activity of 8 healthy subjects (control group) and 19 patients with NFLE. We discovered different nature of the spectral behavior of EEG signals for the control group and the patients: for the brain activity of the healthy subjects low-frequency periodic processes are predominant; in the case of patients with epilepsy high-frequency activity also actively manifests. Our analysis also reveals the difference in the level of manifestation of the frequency-phase synchronization effects at the pathology in comparison with the control group. We believe that our study, after appropriate validation, will be helpful for the development and application of the new diagnostic methods for patients with NFLE.
