Influence of ultrasound parameters of the therapeutic frequency range on the optical and thermophysical properties of human skin and on the efficiency of immersion optical clearing in vivo

Abstract

The use of ultrasonic irradiation for optical clearing insufficiently studied.
Here we present the results of theoretical and experimental studies on the effect of ultrasonic irradiation (at frequencies of 1 and 3 MHz with a power density of 0.5 - 2 W / cm^2) on the thermophysical and optical characteristics of human skin in vivo and on the efficiency of immersion optical clearing (optical clearing agent - oleic acid (OA)). Using optical coherence tomography (OCT), the parameters of ultrasonic irradiation of human skin are determined, which are sufficient to observe effective optical clearing. We discovered that ultrasound irradiation alone can increase a light depth penetration for OCT up to ~ 1.4 - fold during 5 min. Nevertheless, sequent application of oleic acid and ultrasound irradiation allowed increasing more than 1.5 sounding depth OCT during 20 min and the time for increasing sounding depth OCT to 120% is nearly halved when using ultrasound irradiation. The effect of the combined use of OA and ultrasonic irradiation is not additive.
