Electromagnetic properties of carbon nanostructures

Igor Sergeevich Nefedov, Saratov State University

Abstract

The report will present models and descriptions of the electromagnetic properties of graphene and carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The properties of graphene are described by the Kubo model and depend on the chemical potential, which can be changed by applying an electric displacement field to the graphene. In addition, the properties of multilayer graphene structures are considered, which under certain conditions exhibit the properties of a hyperbolic medium. Also, a model of graphene with an inverted population of charge carriers is presented and graphene is considered as an amplifying structure.

The electromagnetic properties of CNTs are described using the semiclassical model of pi-electrons, which takes into account both intraband and interband transitions and is applicable up to optical frequencies for both metallic and semiconducting CNTs.
