Abstract
The confocal laser scanning microscope is an indispensable instrument for non-destructive in vivo studies of tissues and cell structures in biology, physiology and medicine.
The purpose of this work is to develop a flexible cost efficient hardware and free software package system as a basis of an open platform for laser scanning microscopy suitable for wide range of applications from state of the art in vivo visualization to basic training in modern microscopy techniques. The confocal imaging module incorporating galvo scanner, laser and detector is designed as a separate device that can be easily upgraded and integrated into the optical system of either upright or inverted microscope.
We tested the performance of scanning microscope optical system, and we discussed cost efficient soundcard based data acquisition hardware. Open platform we developed includes open blueprints for an entry-level optical and data acquisition system and software concept guidelines.
