Experimenting with light at chemistry lessons with secondary school students

Alexey V. Markin, Saratov State University

Abstract

This report describes the experience of application of various hands-on activities with light during the lessons with secondary school students at chemistry club in Institute of Chemistry of Saratov State University. The activities include experiments with light absorbance and elastic scattering (Rayleigh and Mie scattering) as well as fluorescence. Particular attention is paid to the explanation of light extinction concept as the combination of absorbance and scattering. Because the aim of these activities is to demonstrate an importance of light interaction with matter for chemistry, some examples of practical use of light in analytical and physical chemistry are provided and discussed.
